History of Haridwar
Description
Haridwar is one of India’s oldest and holiest cities, located on the banks of the sacred River Ganga. The name means “Gateway to Lord Vishnu.” According to legend, King Bhagirath brought the Ganga from heaven to earth here to purify souls. It is also believed that drops of the divine nectar (Amrit) fell in Haridwar during the churning of the ocean, making it very sacred.
Haridwar has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries, visited by saints and devotees alike. Various ancient dynasties and rulers respected and developed the city. Today, it is famous for the Kumbh Mela, a massive religious festival held every 12 years, and the daily Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, which attracts millions of visitors from all over the world.

Ganga Aarti
One of the most iconic spiritual experiences in India, the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri takes place every evening at sunset. Priests dressed in traditional attire perform synchronized rituals with large brass lamps while Vedic hymns and devotional songs fill the air. The flickering flames, ringing bells, and floating diyas in the holy Ganges create a divine and unforgettable atmosphere. Thousands of devotees and tourists gather daily to witness this magical ceremony.
Har Ki Pauri
Literally meaning “Steps of Lord Shiva,” Har Ki Pauri is the most sacred ghat in Haridwar. It is believed that Lord Vishnu left his footprint here. Pilgrims from all over India come here to take a holy dip in the Ganges, especially during festivals like Kartik Purnima and Ganga Dussehra. The ghat is also the main site for the evening Ganga Aarti and plays a central role in major Hindu rituals.
Kumbh Mela
Haridwar is one of the four locations in India that hosts the Kumbh Mela, a grand religious gathering held every 12 years. During this time, millions of sadhus, saints, pilgrims, and spiritual seekers assemble to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges. The event symbolizes purification and spiritual awakening. It is not just a festival but a massive cultural and religious celebration that draws global attention.
