Description
Sri Lanka, an island in South Asia, has a rich history dating back over 2,500 years. Ancient legends tell of Prince Vijaya’s arrival from India, marking the beginning of the Sinhalese civilization. Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century BCE and became central to the island’s culture. Powerful kingdoms like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa flourished in early times. European powers later arrived—first the Portuguese, then the Dutch, and finally the British, who ruled the entire island by 1815. After gaining independence in 1948, Sri Lanka faced rising ethnic tensions between Sinhalese and Tamils, leading to a civil war from 1983 to 2009. Today, the country continues to rebuild, holding on to its deep cultural roots and natural beauty.
