History of Udaipur
Description
Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II after the fall of Chittorgarh to the Mughals. Surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and built around Lake Pichola, it became the new capital of Mewar.
The city reflects the bravery and pride of the Rajput rulers, especially the Sisodia dynasty, known for their resistance to Mughal invasions. Later, Udaipur became a princely state under British rule in 1818.
After India’s independence, Udaipur joined Rajasthan and is now famous for its rich heritage, palaces, and lakes.

City Palace, Udaipur
Perched on the eastern banks of Lake Pichola, the City Palace is a grand complex of palaces built over 400 years. A perfect blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture, it features beautiful courtyards, balconies, towers, and hanging gardens. Inside, the palace museums exhibit royal costumes, weaponry, and historical artifacts. The intricate mirror work, marble work, murals, and wall paintings offer a glimpse into the royal lifestyle of Mewar rulers.
Lake Pichola
One of the most picturesque lakes in Rajasthan, Lake Pichola was created in 1362 AD. Surrounded by hills, ghats, and heritage buildings, the lake offers stunning views, especially during sunset. A boat ride across its calm waters takes you past iconic landmarks such as Jag Mandir, Lake Palace, and the ghats of the old city. The lake provides a tranquil escape from the bustle of the city and is a must-visit for anyone exploring Udaipur’s charm.
Sajjangarh Palace (Monsoon Palace)
Built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1884, the Sajjangarh Palace is located on a hill overlooking the Fateh Sagar Lake. Originally intended as an astronomical center, it later became a monsoon retreat for the royal family. The palace offers panoramic views of Udaipur city, lakes, and the surrounding Aravalli hills. It is especially popular during sunset for its breathtaking skyline and natural beauty.
