History of Khajuraho
Description
Khajuraho, located in Madhya Pradesh, is famous for its ancient temples known for intricate carvings and stunning architecture. These temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty, who were great patrons of art and culture. At its peak, the site had around 85 temples, though only about 20 remain today. The sculptures on these temples portray gods, goddesses, dancers, musicians, and scenes of everyday life, including some erotic art. These carvings reflect the openness of ancient Indian society and the spiritual philosophy of that era, especially influenced by Tantric beliefs. After the decline of the Chandela rulers, the temples were abandoned and overgrown by forests. They remained hidden until 1838, when British officer T.S. Burt rediscovered them. Since then, Khajuraho has gained worldwide recognition and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

Kandariya Mahadev Temple
The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the grandest and most magnificent temple in Khajuraho. Built around 1030 AD, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered the architectural masterpiece of the Khajuraho group of temples. The structure stands tall with a central shikhara (spire) soaring to 30 meters, symbolizing Mount Meru, the mythical center of the universe. The temple’s exterior is adorned with over 800 finely carved sculptures, including deities, celestial beings, musicians, and sensuous figures, all brought to life with astonishing detail.
Lakshmana Temple
The Lakshmana Temple is one of the oldest and most well-preserved temples in Khajuraho, dating back to around 930–950 AD. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and features a three-headed idol representing Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva. This temple is renowned for its rich carvings that depict scenes from Hindu mythology, courtly life, and divine beings. The sanctum is supported by elaborately decorated pillars and surrounded by stunning exterior sculptures, making it a fine example of early temple architecture.
Khajuraho Dance Festival
The Khajuraho Dance Festival is a celebrated cultural event held every year in February–March. This week-long festival takes place in the open-air auditorium near the Western Group of Temples and brings together some of India’s finest classical dancers and musicians. Under the starlit sky and the glowing temple backdrops, performances of Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and more, make for an unforgettable experience, blending art, spirituality, and heritage.
